Balance Sheet of the 2011 Orange African Youth Championships
The African youth Championships rounded up on Sunday with Nigeria grabbing their sixth continental crown at the expense of Cameroon who lost their second consecutive final.
After six years in the wilderness, the flying Eagles came back in fashion to finally grab another trophy in fashion after their victory over Cameroon at the death of time 3 goals to 2.A well deserved revenge for the Eagles who were beaten at the group stage one nil by the young lions after they started off well with a 2-1 victory over Ghana. The defeat had compromised their chances of qualifying for the next round but the Eagles bounced back in the last game to defeat Gambia two nil and finish as runner up of the group with six points behind leaders,Cameroon,7points as they both qualified for the semis. At this stage,Nigeria faced a tough opposition from their West African neighbours,Mali but the flying Eagles flew their way through the Malian Eagles with a two nil victory.Mali had finished top of group A with seven points ahead of Egypt,South Africa and Lesotho.Nigeria therefore won the 17th edition of the Orange African Youth Championship without really convincing bookmakers. However Cameroon and Egypt who finished second and third respectively were equally better but thegreatest disappointment came fro Ghana. The outgoing African Champions and world champions never really had any concrete argument to put forward. The Black Satelites failed to progress pass the group stage as they finished third in Group B with two points, consequently, will not have a chance to defend their crown at the world youth Championships.Nigeria,Cameroon,Mali and Egypt will represent Africa at the show.
Nigerian striker,Innocent Uche won the tournament’s golden boot with four goals while his team mate Azeez Ramon was voted player of the final while Cameroon’s Salli Edgar was voted the tournament’s best player.
