Group stages : Ghana ‘s shocking exit
The defending African and world champions were surprisingly booted at the group stages of the African youth championships in a group that contained heavyweights like Cameroon and Nigeria.
The group stages that ended over the weekend saw Ghana crashing out of the competition prematurely where they finished third in group B with two points synonymous to elimination..This elimination is costly for the Black Satellites who will not have the opportunity to defend their crown at the world youth championships in Columbia. On the contrary,Cameroon (7pts) and Nigeria (6pts) progress to the semis and eventually qualify for the tournament which takes place from July 29 to August 20 in Columbia.Gambia however managed just a point in this tough group to finish on the fourth spot.
In group A,Mali were the surprised package, picking up a semi final ticket as well as finishing group leaders in their second participation at the tournament. The E aglets started off well with a brilliant 4-2 victory over hosts,South Africa before pecking their Egyptian rivals with a one nil victory and rotating the team in the final group game to earn a 1-1 draw against them to top the group with 7points.Egypt join them to the next round with six while hosts South Africa crash out with three points as well as Lesotho.
The semi finals therefore produce mouth-watering encounters between Mali and Nigeria in a clash of Eagles while Cameroon confront their nemesis,Egypt.
