Nyamweya wins Kenya Football elections

A Nairobi prominent business and outgoing Kenya Football Federation (KFF) boss Samson Keengu Nyamweya is now the newly elected Football Kenya Chairman.


Nyamweya garnered 1,461 votes against his closest rival Hussein Mohamed who garnered 1,183 votes. Sammy Shelei another Nairobi businessman was elected the new Vice Chairman after beating a field of five runners. He got 1,383 votes compared to his runners-up Mohamed Omar who garnered 1,225.

Other contestants in the Vice  Chairman seat included Noah Wanyama, father of   former Inter Milan midfielder MacDonald Mariga who collected 401 votes, Josphat Murila 381 votes and Titus Kasuve 118 votes.

The election exercise was attended by Fifa representative Thierry Regenass,Fifa observers Ashford Mamelodi from Botswana, and Government officials led by Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch.


In his congratulatory speech marked with huge celebrations at the Kasarani Sports Gymnasium  in Nairobi, Nyamweya pledged to do his best to improve the sport in the country.

 “I will commit to this country by working hard for the sport. I will work together with Fifa and Caf and will ensure that football is run professionally as well as ensuring that the rule of law is followed to the letter,” he said.

“I thank God for the victory ands in particular all the clubs, delegates and Kenyans who voted for me today. I would also like to thank Fifa for helping see this process through. It has been a long journey but we have made it,” he added.

It was however a massive embarrassment for outgoing Football Kenya Limited (FKL) chairman Mohamed Hatimy who finished a distant fourth with 734 points.He was`earlier in the day accused of buying votes in Mombasa.

Nyamweya also promised to work closely with Hussein for the better of the sport in the country, “I will bring Hussein to the fold so that we can work together.

This is the result of a long battle. My group has fought so long for this moment and even took Fife to court and today we can enjoy the victory because Kenyans have spoken and stated their wish.”said Nyamweya.
