Boxing : Van Heerden wins IBO welterweight title
South African Chris van Heerden won the IBO welterweight title after beating compatriot Kaizer Mabuza via a unanimous points 117-112, 114-113 and 116-113 in favour of van Heerden during the 12-round bout.
However, the decision was mixed with controversy as American referee Robert Byrd was reported to have failed to punish Van Heerden on several occasions for his dirty tricks.
In the sixth round, Mabuza was docked a point after punching Van Heerden’s ear whilst the latter went unpunished after a deliberate elbow on his opponent.
