Kenya Parliamentary committee grill All Africa Games organisers

The steering committee for last year’s All-Africa games faced a barrage of accusations before a Kenya parliamentary committee on tuesday afternoon.

Led by Ministry of Sports Permanent Secretary James Waweru, the committee was put to task to answer several allegations raised by various sports federations and players who travelled to Mozambique last September. The departmental committee on labour, social and welfare committee wanted clarifications on ticket refunds,  accommodation challenges, grants given to federations and preparations for the games. The committee also raised issues about the quality of the kit given out to athletes during the games and whether the kit was of the required standard. Belgut  Member of  Parliament Charles Keter who chaired the committee further took issue with luck of payment for sparring partners who were part of preparations for the games. The controversy over two tae kwondo players who travelled to Maputo by road also featured prominently in the  meeting and the National Olympic Committee (NOCK) together with the Kenya National Sports Council were put on the spot for failing to resolve wrangles in the sport.    Another hot issue was the presence of  joy riders in the Maputo bound squad with Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Nairobi branch treasurer Moses Mbuthia being mentioned as one of those who should not have been in the squad and was listed as a member of the karate team. Responding to the concerns, Sports Permanent Secretary James Waweru said they have made arrangements to issue refunds to those who are owed and explained that the delay had been caused by luck of the required documents. “Regarding joy riders, this is something we have clamped down on and there is no evidence of that happening,” he said. Charles Nyaberi who was the chef de mission also defended the presence of Mbuthia in the Kenyan squad insisting that as a member of the marketing committee he did a lot in Maputo. “His name was put in the karate list by mistake,” explained Nyaberi. Nyaberi while admitting that the issue of accommodation had been a problem in Maputo but that this was not a solely Kenyan matter.
