Kenya Rugby team jet back in Nairobi amid thunderous cheers

Kenya may miss the services of its utility player former captain Humphrey Kayange in the next leg of the HSBC International Rugby Board (IRB) sevens series.

This is after Kayange reported to his new institution, Bristol University in the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue further studies on Wednesday.

However head coach Mitch Ocholla remained optimistic that the former captain shall have settled at his new institution by the time Kenya leaves for the Hong Kong leg scheduled for March 25-27.

"We'll link up with Kayange in Hong Kong, but that is pending his availability. I still don't know whether he will play in the Hong Kong, he has just reported to college yesterday, we'll see how it goes," noted Ocholla.

Kayange was recalled to the national team ahead of the of the IRB HSBC Sevens series Wellington and Las Vegas legs.

The player returned to the squad he led until the end of last season when he decided to step aside to pursue further studies but his intentions were interupted at the start of the year by being denied a visa because of a problem with his papers until he was later granted entry to Britain.

Ocholla said the team will have a two week break before assembling his charges adding that there are no major injuries to the squad except a little bruises.

Ocholla said he's proud with the team's performance adding that the confidence and energy level are high in the squad and will work on improving the players efficiency as they prepare for the next legs.

Commissioner for Sports Gordon Oluoch urged Kenya 7's rugby team that won Bowl Cup in Wellington, New Zealand and plate in Les Vegas-USA  to carry the good form into the next two legs of the HSBC Sevens World Series to be staged in Japan and Hong Kong.

Sports commissioner, Gordon Oluoch accompanied by the team's sponsor Kenya Airways (KQ) Chief executive officer Titus Naikuni made the remarks after receiving the Kenyan team at the  Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from Les Vegas, on thursday morning
"You have done this country proud by winning, now you have to find means and way to remain where you are by doing even better in the coming legs. We want you to make Kenya a top rugby nation," said Oluoch.

Naikuni who watched the team play in Les Vegas re-affirmed KQ's support to the team adding the government should take advantage of the team's performance to market Kenya  as a tourism destination.
"I can tell you for sure that Kenyans are proud of your performance. Now you need to sit down as a team, be truthful to one another and say where you went wrong and then improve on your weaknesses, advised Naikuni.
Kenya rallied back from a 7-0 deficit to overcome Argentina to clinch the HSBC International Rugby Board (IRB) plate title in Las Vegas, United States of America (USA) on Sunday.

Kenya beat Wales, the International Rugby Board World Rugby Sevens champions 22-17 Sunday for the second time in as many weeks to cruise to the Plate final of USA Sevens, the fifth leg of the IRB HSBC World Series.
Kenya won the Bowl in New Zealand by beating Australia in the final.
