UNEP organise half marathon in Nairobi

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has organized a half marathon race to celebrate it’s 40 anniversary scheduled for February 19th.


Unep is organizing the race in partnership with Athletics Kenya (AK) and the Paul Tergat Foundation.
Former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat said the winner will pocket Sh100,000 in both the men’s and women’s categories with top 10 athletes being feted with cash awards in the event targeting 1,000 runners.

He said the registration is free and any interested runner can register at  Riadha House which is the AK headquarters in Nairobi, Ngong, Iten, Kaptagat Nike Camp, Grand Pri Hotel in Eldoret, Bomet, Kisii and Nyahururu Mfae Club among others.


“For those who will just want to have fun ,there will be a 5km fun run for the family, schools, corporate teams and the UNEP community and their delegates,” he said.


Tergat who held the world record from 2003 to 2007 and is the World Food Programme goodwill ambasadeur will participate in the 5km fun run together with Patrick Makau who set the new world marathon mark last year to lend their support to the event.


The five time world cross country champion asked athletes to register in big numbers promising that it will be interesting with thrills promising that it will be run on an exciting course.


 The event will coincide with the convening of the 12th session of the UNEP Governing Council/Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF). UNEP’s  division of Communication and Public Information acting director Nick Nuttall invited dignitaries and officials from 150
countries attending the meeting to shorter five kilometer run
“It is befitting and inspiring for UNEP to think of incorporating an athletics race as part of its build up activities towards celebrating their 40 years in existence,” he said.
