Interview with Sauti Sol on their new album: Sol Filosofia
After the explosive success of their first album, Mwanzo, Sauti Sol is back with yet another promising album called Sol Filosofia. The Album was recorded in Sweden, and recently released on the Penya label back in their home town of Nairobi, Kenya. As of today it is also available online right here. Accompanying the album is the vibrant video clip of the song Soma Kijana. The song represents something special which the band stands for, and after a fun and informative Twitter interview we reviled the song’s positive essence: “it basically emphasises on the need for education and the empowerment of young people”. Here's an excerpt from the Twitter interview: AU: Sol Filosofia, so what is the philosophy of the album? I mean, what influenced you and shaped the music? SS: The album's our philosophy what we believe in, musically and in life… hence the name Filosofia, Swahili for philosophy. And our ideals are choices, challenges and consequences in life: the 3 C's. AU: What is your favorite track of the album? And why? SS: Each song in the album has a special attachment to us, because we were there as they were created and recorded. Deep down in each of us there is a personal favorite maybe, but in our many talks we love the album as a whole. For sure fans and new listeners will have their favorites, Sol Filosofia as a whole does it for us. To add more to the why part: for some of the songs they were written as early as 3 years ago even before the 1st album. We thought they had to mature and some just came to us during recording e.g Sol Generation, we wrote it while in Sweden. AU: Could you tell us what's special about Soma Kijana, of which the video clip was just released? SS: Soma Kijana is special ‘cause it basically emphasizes on the need for education and the empowerment of young people. More so in a country like Kenya, where the youth are a majority, we feel they need to learn life’s know-hows… 8) AU: So, put aside the awesome beats of the song, does it promote going to school and secondary studies via the fun of it? SS: By all means it does! We wanted to make it cool and fun but in the long run create a hook that will be on people's lips. It seeks to show that education and learning is an everyday experience. We recommend that you stand up before starting to watch the video because the beats are simply irresistible not the dance to, and don’t forget to support Sauti Sol on their Africa Unsigned page so we can continue on receiving great music from the band.
